Should your holiday let be pet-friendly?
Many UK holidaymakers won’t go away without the dog. Welcoming them can open your calendar to a whole group of guests — if you set it up properly.
Allowing pets is a big decision. It can bring in more bookings, particularly outside the school holidays, but it also means more cleaning and a little more risk. Here is how to decide — and how to make it work if you say yes.
Weigh it up
There is no right answer for every property. Think about these points honestly before you decide.
- More guestsPet-friendly filters bring you guests who would otherwise skip your listing.
- Quieter monthsDog owners often travel outside school holidays.
- Extra cleaningHair, muddy paws and the odd chewed corner — budget time for it.
- AllergiesSome guests choose pet-free homes. Decide which guests you want.
House rules that work
- Set a pet fee or a deep-clean charge, and say so clearly before booking.
- Limit the number and size of dogs.
- Keep dogs off beds and sofas — and provide throws and a dog bed.
- Leave towels for muddy paws by the door, and a list of local dog-friendly walks and pubs.
Try it and review
If you are unsure, try welcoming dogs for a season with clear rules and a pet fee. Look at the bookings, the cleaning time and any damage, then decide whether to carry on.
